Vol. 3... Life and Times of S. Carter is the fourth studio album by American rapper Jay-Z. It was released on December 28, 1999 through Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam Recordings. Recording sessions took place at The Hit Factory, D&D Studios, Baseline Studios, Manhattan Center Studio, Sony Music Studios and Quad Studios in New York City from November 1998 to October 1999. It exhibits a return to the street-oriented sound of his debut album Reasonable Doubt, as opposed to the radio-friendly sound of his two previous albums. Production was handled by DJ Premier, Darrell "Digga" Branch, Timbaland, K-Rob, Swizz Beatz, DURO, Rockwilder, Sean "SAF" Francis, DJ Clue, Russell "Russ" Howard, Lil Rob, Chauncey Mahan, Ken Ifill, Lance "UN" Rivera and Irv Gotti, with Kareem "Biggs" Burke, Damon Dash and Jay-Z himself serving as executive producers. It includes guest appearances by Beanie Sigel, Amil, Memphis Bleek, Mariah Carey, Juvenile, Dr. Dre and UGK.

The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts respectively, selling 462,000 copies in its first week. It was a significant commercial success, shipping two million copies within its first month of release. The album received positive reviews from music critics. Vol. 3... Life and Times of S. Carter released the singles: "Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up)", "Things That U Do" and "Big Pimpin'". On February 14, 2001, The album was certified 3x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
