The Nonce was an American hip hop duo from Los Angeles, California. Consisting of rappers and producers Nouka Basetype and Yusef Afloat, the duo developed a reputation for their smooth, jazzy production and laidback, intelligent rhymes. The duo made their debut in 1992 with the single "The Picnic Song", and released their most successful single, "Mixtapes", in 1994. In 1995, The Nonce released their only full-length album, World Ultimate, to a mediocre reception, although it has been regarded more highly in recent years. In 1998, The Nonce released the EP The Sight of Things. The duo's last release was the single "Turnin' It Out" in 1999.
On 21 May 2000, Yusef Afloat was found dead on the side of a Los Angeles freeway. The cause of his death remains a mystery. Following The Nonce's dissolution, Nouka Basetype changed his stage name to Sach and has since released several solo albums.
