Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik is the debut studio album by American hip hop duo OutKast, released in April 26, 1994 on LaFace Records and Arista Records. Recording sessions took place at The Dungeon, D.A.R.P. Studios, Purple Dragon, Bosstown Studios and Doppler Studios in Atlanta from July 1993 to February 1994. The production was handled entirely by Organized Noize. Includes guest appearances by Goodie Mob and Society of Soul. After befriending each other in 1992, rappers André 3000 (then known simply as Andre) and Big Boi pursued recording music as a duo and worked with production team Organized Noize, which led to their signing to LaFace. It was recorded at various studios in the duo's hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.
The album features live instrumentation and musical inspiration from funk and soul genres. Wanting to make a statement about urban life as an African-American in the South, OutKast wrote and recorded the album in their teenage years and addressed coming of age topics. Repetitive hooks, tongue-twisters, triplet rhyme schemes, and Southern slang are also incorporated into their lyrics.
The album peaked at #20 on the Billboard 200, and #3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. It was promoted with three singles, including the popular "Player's Ball". Upon its release, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik received positive reviews from music critics and helped to further establish the South as a credible hip hop scene, amid the market dominance of East Coast and West Coast hip hop. The album has since been viewed by writers as an important release in both hip hop and Atlanta's music scene.
