Reggie Gibson, better known by his stage name Saafir, is an American rapper, record producer and actor from Oakland, California. He was a member of the hip hop groups Digital Underground, Hobo Junction and Golden State Project.

Early life[]

Gibson was raised in group homes and foster homes. He was first inspired to rap after hearing "I Need a Beat" by LL Cool J.[1]

Professional career[]

Gibson joined Digital Underground through a connection with his cousin. After he was released from jail, Gibson saw his cousin appear in the "Doowutchyalike" (1991) music video and started to hang out with them.[1] Gibson appeared on Digital Underground's album The Body-Hat Syndrome (1993).

Gibson became close with fellow Digital Underground member Tupac Shakur and lived in Shakur's house. Gibson met the Hughes Brothers after they shot Shakur's music video for "Brenda's Got a Baby". They offered him the role of Cousin Harold in the film Menace II Society (1993), which Gibson successfully auditioned for.[1]

King Tech, co-host of The Wake-Up Show, considers Saafir's flow as one of the most unique he has heard.[1]
