The label was established in 1995 as an independent outlet for Carter, who first brought the label to attention with his 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt. The label was home to artists such as Kanye West, Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, Juelz Santana, Cam'ron, Freeway, The Diplomats, Jadakiss and many more.
