Biography[]
Richie Cunning (born in San Francisco, California) is an American rap recording artist, lyricist, record producer, and mixer. Growing up, Cunning was surrounded by all kinds of music, not only at home, but also at other places such as family gatherings. From other rap artists like Nas to classic jazz, these were what inspired him to put those particular two together like other acts in the same, hybrid sub-genre of rap and follow his path to hip hop stardom. He would make his debut on his album, Grizzly Man - The Authorized Mixtape, which was mixed by Lou Dimes, released in 2007 on Rec-League Records. In between albums, he formed the Rec-League All-Stars with Cumulus (later rechristened QM), Grip Grand, Proe, and Rob Rush who contributed their song, "Disneyland" to the 2008 various artists set, Bomb Hip Hop Compilation Volume 2. That same year, Cunning also was featured on "A Penny" from Grip Grand's Brokelore and "Da Recwilder" from Boner Jams '03, and "Paper Thick" alongside Rakaa-Iriscience from Zion I's The Search & The Seizure. Cunning's next mixtape, Late Night Special, was released on the same label the following year. Some of the tracks were produced by himself, others were co-produced with other members of his production team, Scoviet Union. That exact year, he was featured on DJ M.F. Shalem's single, "How Refreshing". In 2010, he returned with Night Train on the Routine Fly label. For the remainder of the 2010s, he continued to have features on others' albums: "One Hunna" alongside A-1 and Zumbi from SMKA's 201 mixtape, Darkest Before Dawn; "I'm Knowin'" alongside Shoboat from Telli Prego's 2014 album, Mouthpiece Over Matter; "Bad Boy" alongside Sakima from Equipto x Otayo Dubb's 2015 collaboration album, Baby Steps; "Party After Party" alongside DJ Silly Kid and Vince The Bard from QM x Rob Rush's 2016 collaboration EP, Unreleased Japan EP 2005/2006; and "How Refreshing" alongside Adverse, Haji P., Grip Grand, Mr. Odyssey, and Adeem, "How Ya Livin'" alongside Derek V., and "Rap Sh*t" alongside Grip Grand from DJ M.F. Shalem's 2018 album, My Friends Rap Better Than Yours. He also had a solo track titled "I Mean Please" from that album and another titled "Leave It Alone" from Zion I's 2013 mixtape, Hella Fresh Fest. In 2015, his EP, 1906, was issued through Rec-League. In 2022, Cunning self-released his latest album, Big Deal.
