"4 Better or 4 Worse" (1993)

"Passin' Me By" is a song by American hip hop group The Pharcyde, released in March 1993 on Delicious Vinyl. The song was the second single released from the group's 1992 debut Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde. The song, produced by J-Swift, utilizes samples from "Summer in the City" by Quincy Jones, "125th Street Congress" by Weather Report, and "Are You Experienced?" by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In the song, the four Pharcyde MCs rap about their schoolboy crushes: Bootie Brown raps about his teacher, Slimkid3 raps about his first girlfriend, Imani raps about a girl that is already taken, and Fatlip raps about a girl who ignores him. The chorus is sung by Fatlip.

The song peaked at #1 on the Hot Rap Singles, #52 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #28 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks charts. Pitchfork Media included the song at number 41 on their Top 200 Tracks of the 90s.

Music video[edit | edit source]

Like many other Pharcyde music videos, two versions were made.[1][2] Both were directed by Sanji and were shot entirely in black and white. The rappers are seen upside down in the video, and rapping in the backseat of a car.
