Onyx is an American hip hop group from South Jamaica, Queens, New York. The group currently consists of Sticky Fingaz and Fredro Starr. Sonny Seeza and the late Big DS were also members, but the former left sometime in the early 2000s and the latter left before the group's second studio album. The group is known for their threatening personas and violent lyrics.
The group was formed in 1990 and released their debut single, "Ah, And We Do It Like This", that same year. The song featured light-hearted lyrics and revealed a strong jazz rap influence, noticeably more than in their later work. In 1991, the group was to present a demo to Jam Master Jay at Def Jam, but Big DS and Sonee Seeza were in Connecticut at the time, so Fredro Starr got in contact with his cousin Sticky Fingaz, who joined the group to release the single "Throw Ya Gunz" in 1992. After the release of the song, Onyx signed a recording contract with Def Jam and released the album Bacdafucup in 1993, which was met with great commercial success, including heavy airplay on radio and MTV for the single "Slam".
Big DS left the group after the release of the first album to pursue an ultimately unsuccessful solo career. In 1995, Onyx released their second albukers, Sunset Park and Dead Presidents. Onyx returned in 1998 with their third album Shut 'Em Down and released their fourth album Triggernometry in 2003 after leaving Def Jam. In 2014, the release of the album Wakedafucup marked the group's first studio album in over a decade.
