Licensed to Ill is the debut album by American hip hop group Beastie Boys, released in 1986 on Def Jam Recordings and Columbia Records. It was the first hip hop album to top the Billboard album chart. It is also one of Columbia Records' fastest-selling debut records to date, and has sold over nine million copies in the United States.
The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1987, and was eventually certified 9x multi-platinum in 2001. The single "Brass Monkey" was certified Gold for shipment of 500,000 sales.
Legacy[]
In 1998, it was selected by The Source as one of the 100 Best Albums.
Rolling Stone ranked Licensed to Ill at #192 on its list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" in 2020.[1]
