"Just a Friend" is a hip hop song by American rapper Biz Markie, released in 1989 by Cold Chillin' Records. It was the first single released from Markie's sophomore album, The Biz Never Sleeps. Produced by Markie himself, it is his most well-known and successful song, reaching the #9 position on the Billboard charts.
The song samples the 1968 song "You Got What I Need" by Freddie Scott, whose basic chord and melody provided the base for the song's chorus and made it famous. Due to the widespread popularity of the song and its influence on pop culture, Biz is often classified as a one-hit wonder. VH1 ranked the song as #100 on its list of the greatest hip hop songs.
