Funky 4 + 1 was an American hip hop group from The Bronx, New York. They were the first hip hop group to receive a recording deal when they signed to Enjoy Records in 1977. The group are also notable for having the first female rapper and were the first hip hop group to perform live on a national television broadcast.
The original members of the group were K. K. Rockwell, Keith Keith, Sha Rock and Rahiem. The latter left to join Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and was replaced by Rodney Cee and Jazzy Jeff. When the group signed to Enjoy, none of the members were older than seventeen years old. The label released their debut single, "Rappin' and Rockin' the House" in 1979, although the group are best known for the song "That's the Joint", released the following year. Shortly after its release, the group moved to Sugar Hill Records. After a dispute with their label, Rodney Cee and K. K. Rockwell left the group, and the rest of the members disassembled some time after without having released a studio album.
