Fantastic, Vol. 2 is the debut album by American hip hop group Slum Village, released in 2000 on Good Vibe Recordings and Barak Records. During the time of its release, the group was still composed of its original members T3, Baatin and Jay Dee.
The album was initially completed in 1998 for another record label, but the label became obsolete before the album was released and left Slum Village in limbo for over a year. During this period, the group's producer Jay Dee greatly increased his profile through work with artists such as Common, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest. At the same time, tremendous amounts of acclaim from hip hop notables such as Questlove of The Roots and Q-Tip built up anticipation for the long-delayed LP. Slum Village eventually found an outlet with Good Vibe and Barak Records, and released the album to slow sales and heavy bootlegging. The group nevertheless had a huge impact on the underground hip hop circuit, and were proclaimed as the successors of the departing A Tribe Called Quest.
Fantastic, Vol. 2 received a great deal of praise by music critics. In particular, Jay Dee's much lauded production work on the album, with its subtle grooves and soul claps, became a blueprint for the direction that neo soul would take in the following years.
