Def Dames were an American hip hop recording duo formed 1988 in Bakersfield, California. The original duo were Kandy Kane (born Marilyn Smith) and Special T (born Yolanda Sugart, who was also known as The Ace Senorita). A hip hop producer known as Stephen "DJ Sparkle" Evans discovered them and that led to a record deal with the label, the Sedona Record Company. The next year, their debut album, 2-4 The Bass, was released. The album made #76 on Billboard's Hot R&B Albums chart. The pair of singles from that, "976-Boom" and "Set It Off", both became hits on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart: The former at #19; the latter at #20. As one of those rap acts who weren't from Miami but rather the West Coast, they could perform bass music as well as other forms of dance music, electro, pop-rap, and hip-house skillfully, and equally. That same year, they performed live at the Throw Down Fest '89 Dance Concert with DJ Sparkle. After the next decade began, Special T split from her other half over financial disputes and was replaced by Larissa (born Petrina Walker). In 1991, the second album, 2-Large, followed on both Sedona and Zoo Entertainment. The album didn't appear on any of Billboard's Albums charts. But one of the singles from that, "The King of Romance", reached #26 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart and it was their last hit. The other single from that, "Whip It", had no chart action. By 1992, Def Dames had split.
