Capital Punishment is the debut studio album by American rapper Big Pun, released in April 28, 1998 on Loud Records. Recording sessions took place at Mystic Studios, Battery Studios, Axis Studios, Cutting Room Studios and D&D Studios in New York City from June 1997 to February 1998. Production was handled by RZA, Juju, Domingo, Rockwilder, V.I.C., Knobody, Showbiz, Dahoud, Danny O, Dead Prez, L.E.S., Trauma, Nomad, Fat Joe, Younglord, Frank Nitty, Jugrnaut, Mike Zulu and Minnesota. It incudes guest appearances by Wyclef Jean, Black Thought, Joe, Miss Jones, Inspectah Deck, Prodigy (of Mobb Deep), Busta Rhymes, Funkmaster Flex, Dead Prez and Terror Squad members: Cuban Link, Armageddon, Triple Seis, Fat Joe and Prospect. The album received critical acclaim, peaking at #4 on the Billboard 200 charts and #1 on the Top R&B Albums chart for two weeks. It was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 1999 Grammy Awards but lost to Jay-Z's Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life. Capital Punishment is regarded as a classic hip hop album because of Pun's technical efficiency and wordplay. It was the first Latin hip hop record to platinum.
Capital Punishment was the only Big Pun album released during his lifetime.
