Black Star is an American hip hop duo formed in 1997, from Brooklyn, New York. The duo is composed of rappers Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Black Star arose from the underground movement of the late 1990s, which was in large part due to their label, Rawkus Records. They released one album together, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, in 1998 to critical acclaim, but only moderate commercial success. Both members have gone on to greater commercial and critical success in solo careers.
