Kevin Gilliam, better known by his stage name Battlecat, is an American record producer from Long Beach, California. Battlecat emerged as a DJ in the Los Angeles electro-rap scene of the late 1980s before emerging a highly sought after West Coast hip hop producer in the mid-1990s. His aesthetic is a progression from the early-1990s g-funk sound pioneered by Dr. Dre and Cold 187um, characterized by fat synth bass lines and soulful keys.
His intended 1995 debut album, Gumbo Roots, was shelved and remains unreleased officially. Despite a limited solo discography, Battlecat's production work is immense and he has worked with a large quantity of West Coast hip hop artists.
