Biography[]
Baby DC (born Derek Coleman January 7, 1986 in Oakland, California, USA) is an American, former rap recording artist and lyricist. Exposed to the music of such rappers as N.W.A, Too $hort, and Kool Moe Dee, he was of toddler age when he showed an interest in and took up rapping himself, pursuing a professional career in rap when he was five years old. After catching the attention of Too $hort, he was invited by him to perform at a San Jose barbecue. Originally going by Baby D, he made his recorded debut on the track, "Thangs Change", from Too $hort's 1995 album, Cocktails with the kid rap duo, Illegal. Then, that same year, he cut his first solo track, "Can I Get Loose", included on The Dangerous Crew's various artists compilation, Don't Try This at Home. He wrote his song, "Baby D", and that was included on Too $hort's 1996 album, Gettin' It (Album Number Ten). Now adopting the stage name, Baby DC, he is notable for being the premier artist to sign with Too $hort's $hort Records/Bay Leaf Productions imprint. Through that, his debut and only solo album, School Dayz, was released in 1998 or 1999. It included his rap remake of boogie artist Vaughn Mason's "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll", which was as minor hit. Among the producers on the album were Ant Banks, Jazze Pha, Spearhead X, and Quint Black. DC contributed co-writing and was featured on the track, "U Stank", from Too $hort's 2001 album, Chase The Cat. After disappearing from the scene for a few years, he returned under a new stage name, Young Bay, and formed a trio with Boo Ski and Lil Red called Murda Mob, which were a part of Too $hort's The Up All Nite Crew. Three songs by Murda Mob were featured on Too $hort and The Up All Nite Crew's 2006 compilation, Gangsters & Strippers Volume 1: "Come And See About Me", "What's That About" and "It's The Mob", plus a track with Too $hort and The Pack titled "Sugar Daddy". As Young Bay, he and Too $hort appeared on the track, "Got To Go", from DJ Vlad's set on the various DJs and rappers 2006 cut-up mixtape, Big Mike, Radio, Tapemasters Inc., DJ Vlad, DJ Smallz - Starring In: Mixtape Murder All-Stars V. 1. As Young Bay once more, he contributed his solo track, "Birthday", to the 2009 various acts compilation, New Artist Review, before disappearing from the scene again.
