A Tribe Called Quest was an American hip hop group from Queens, New York. Formed in 1988, the group consisted of MC/producer Q-Tip, MC Phife Dawg, DJ/producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad and hypeman Jarobi White. Along with De La Soul and Jungle Brothers, the group was a central part of the Native Tongues Posse, and experienced the most success out of all of the artists to emerge from that collective. A Tribe Called Quest are regarded as iconic pioneers of both alternative hip hop music and jazz rap, and have paved the way for many innovative artists.
The group released five albums between 1990 and 1998, and they disbanded in 1998. The group sporadically reunited and toured together, although they never released or recorded music together after 1998's The Love Movement. The group made a prominent reunion in 2015 on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and they decided to record one final album. Phife Dawg passed away due to diabetes in early 2016, but the remaining group members finished the album, We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, which was named by Phife, and released it in late 2016.
