3500 is the lead single for Travis Scott's debut album Rodeo, featuring heavy hitters Future and 2 Chainz, along with production from Metro Boomin and additional production from Zaytoven, Mike Dean, Mano, and Allen Ritter. The song is regarded as being in the trap genre, despite Rodeo's other psychedelic hip hop tracks. The song is named after Kim Kardashian spending $3,500 for daughter North West's coat, a very wealthy purchase, with the topic being the basis for the hook[1].

Background[]

3500 originated during Kanye West's Yeezus II sessions, under the title of Been Trill and possibly featuring Drake, according to Kanye's ex-DJ and producer Mano[2]. Originally, it was intended to be a single and had a "completely different beat", yet the same hook as featured[2]. For the Rodeo version, Kanye West and Rick Ross were desired as features, yet both didn't record despite Kanye West being featured on the track Piss On Your Grave. 2 Chainz possibly could have been not intended for the song, as Future had recorded versions before him[3]. The song's title and artwork was revealed on June 5, 2015, with Mike Dean hinting it was soon to come in a few days[4][5]. Two days later, on June 7, Travis Scott premiered the song at the HOT97 Summer Jam 2015 Festival, with the song releasing the next day[6].

Reception[]

3500 debuted at Number 82 on the US Billboard Hot 100, along with 43,000 first week copies sold[7][8]. Along side with debuting at Number 82 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart, the 3500 debuted at number 25 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart[9]. Later on, the song would get a Gold certification from the RIAA on January 11, 2017[10]. As of June 2024, 3500 has garnered over more than 220,000,000 streams on streaming service Spotify[11].
